NOHRA MOERAT

PUBLIC OFFICER

I am the eldest sister of Aadil Moerat. With a nine-year age difference, I would like to think that in a way I was his first mentor, after my father. We were friends as well as siblings and shared a love for reading, music, art etc. I introduced him to Black Consciousness, local jazz, reggae music and protest poetry. He introduced me to community activism and the UDF. We always had a lot to talk about.

My father got me involved in the bursary fund in 2002 and I have served on its committee since then. The fund was started to celebrate the legacy of Aadil through providing financial support to students who would share his ideals of universal healthcare. Originally it was the desire to replace the doctor the community had lost that gave impetus to the bursary fund. And once the fund was established, my father dreamt of formalising it into a Trust to ensure longevity and sustainability.

In 2017 I started the process to achieve this – the Dr Aadil Moerat Medical Bursary Trust is therefore in itself a celebration of the legacy of our father, Mogamat Noor Moerat. My role as public officer is to take care of the administration and ensure that we are compliant as a public benefit organisation.

I consider it an honour to support this group of eminent trustees for as long as I am able and am confident that we will always have capable people involved to ensure the longevity of the Trust.
