
Meet the Trustees
Dehran Swart
Chairperson of the Dr Aadil Moerat Medical Bursary Trust, Dehran Swart is a first cousin of Aadil (their mothers are sisters). They attended Douglas Rd Primary School, South Peninsula High School and UCT together. Over the years they forged tight bonds as brothers, friends and comrades. He and Aadil were both detained in 1986 near Wittebome Station, Aadil for just over a month while Dehran spent 342 days in Victor Verster Prison. Dehran was also Aadil’s bestman when he got married in 1988.
He has the following qualifications: BSc in Biochemistry & Microbiology; BSc(Med)Hons in Community Health; HDE(PG)Sec in Education and a Masters in Public Health.
His experience includes being a secondary school educator; a specialist scientist at the MRCSA (Health Promotion Research & Development); a senior project manager at the Paraffin Safety Association of Southern Africa; and a senior manager within the Faculty of Health Sciences. He previously directed research on international studies funded by a NIH Fogarty R01 grant as well as by CDC/WHO. He served as a consultant for WHO’s Tobacco Free Initiative in Geneva and as contributor / regional consultant for the WHO African Region / Eastern Mediterranean Region (WHO World Report on Child Injury Prevention, 2008).
He is currently employed as the Health Teaching Platform Manager (Faculty of Health Sciences, UCT) since 2014. He is also a member of the EXCO of the Department of Family, Community and Emergency Care. He is integrally involved in the Healthy Futures SA project funded by the Mastercard Foundation, a Board Member at Ithemba Lobomi, NPO based in Thembalethu, George, and Chairperson of the Victoria Hospital Facility Board.
